MSc Instructional Design Programme
I have a keen interest in ,New Trends in Instruction ,Educational Research and Technology, but I love online learning and incorporating technology in any curriculum / training to reach solutions. This search for professional qualification led me to this MSc IDT Programme .As a Graduate Student I have recognized much can be learnt through collaboration, social learning ,self-directed learning guided discovery and constructivist approach experiential learning and reflection. This programme has helped expanded my knowledge and skills. And a closer step to the goal of an Instructional Designer with my main focus of E-Learning Design,E-Learning 2.0 ,E-Learning Theory and E-Learning courses and E-Learning in general .Educational Technology, allows for differentiated instruction which I use very often as a Mathematics Teacher it can be individualized allowing the learner to work at their own pace.
Mayer (2001) defines E-learning theory as “the cognitive science principles of effective multimedia learning using electronic educational technology.”
Robinson et.al,(2016) defines Educational Technology as "the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using, and managing appropriate technological processes and resources."
Educational technology encompasses online learning. The three main learning theories behaviorism , cognitivism and constructivism can be incorporated in designing and interacting with educational technology .E-learning 2.0 is a type of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) system that can increase the emphasis on social learning where learning takes place through conversations about content and problems and actions (Redecker,2009).
Because of my interest the courses EDID6508,EDID6509 and EDID6510 where we were required to design an Instructional Unit using Instructional Media ; design a prototype using CSCL and PSL ;designing a course using a LMS stood out in my to choose artifacts and to reflect upon.I believe because I currently work in education and training, I have developed some of the skills needed for instructional design. My lesson planning and curriculum planning skills were very relevant and assisted me a great deal with this programme.
I chose E-learning because , as a teacher I believe all learners need to be exposed to online learning and distance education in the 21st century especially adults, this can only be accomplished through Elearning . As I teach special needs learners as well .Online education is an alternative for these students because they get to work at their own pace and in their own home. E-learning allows for the availability of online course notes, materials and allows for online class discussions; help in understanding course content; ability to review lectures ; and communication with the course instructor at any time .E-learning course are less expensive to produce ,moves faster ,provides a consistent message and can be updated easily and quickly but most importantly because many of the elements used in E-Learning such as video, audio, quizzes, blogs ,wikis ,discussion forums encourage interaction and collaboration and can lead to increased retention and a stronger grasp on the concepts .
Click on the links below for the courses that I have reflected on.
EDID6503-Instructional Design Theories, Models and Strategies
EDID6505-Systems Approach to Designing Instructional Materials
EDID6508-Developing Instructional Media
EDID6509-Designing Learning and Performance Solutions
EDID6510-Learning & Knowledge Management Systems
This e-portfolio is a way to express my opinions and reflect on my own practice. The field of instructional design is constantly changing and ID professionals are required to be more in-depth critical thinkers. We are required to apply model and theories to any educational or corporate institution /problem and achieve an end result of tangible outcomes and ROIs. I am very happy that the projects in the programme were designed to include real-life application and experiences and case studies that may exist, thus allowing me to focus on the context .I am leaving the program as a critical thinker. I am aware that the knowledge I acquired can assist me with the instructional design process and can be used as just a guide .I understand that what is most important is addressing the client and stake-holder needs . I look forward to opportunities to sharpen my skills and add value to any situation and/or organization. I do recognize that I have more to learn and the readiness and the willingness I possess to read, listen, and reflect more will keep me on the cutting edge of this field.
Thanks to all the faculty members for a great meaningful experience!
Reflections
